One of our clients recently asked me, “How can I get my website to rank 1 on Google?’. Well, that’s a good question. However, the answer isn’t straightforward. So, I wrote this article to shed some light on this steadily reoccurring question: How do you rank 1 on Google?
To Rank 1 on Google – Under the Hood
First of all, it appears to be pretty straightforward with this search engine called Google. There is a search bar; you type in keywords. Then, a few seconds after hitting ‘search’, hundreds or thousands of results are displayed. However, what actually happens behind the scenes is far more complex than most of us can imagine. In fact, Google makes around 4 billion decisions to create a ranking for each search result. So, our job is to constantly influence these 4 billion decisions in our client’s favour.
Search Engine Optimisation improves Ranking
The critical term in this regard is SEO (search engine optimisation). SEO works best if it is performed as a continuous effort rather than a one-off exercise. On-site SEO means integrating the right keywords into various parts of our client’s website, such as title bar, meta tags, page content, etc. We then evaluate the performance of these keywords over time by tracking site visitor numbers and Google rankings. Then, learning from these results and the optimisation process starts over again. There is no one-off quick fix that actually creates results in terms of SEO.
Beware of False Promises!
Any company that guarantees rank one on Google or claims to have some sort of relationship with the search engine should be treated with suspicion as Google does not have any business alliances with SEO companies.
Being careful with SEO companies that offer link building services is strongly recommended. The wrong type of links built to your website can even lead to your website being ranked badly, or your site can be banned from search engines altogether!
